A Model of Larval Biomechanics Reveals Exploitable Passive Properties for Efficient Locomotion

چکیده
To better understand the role of natural dynamics in motor control, we have constructed a mathematical model of crawling mechanics in larval Drosophila. The model accounts for key anatomical features such as a segmentally patterned, viscoelastic outer body wall (cuticle); a non-segmented inner cavity (haemocoel) filled with incompressible fluid that enables visceral pistoning; and claw-like protrusions (denticle bands) giving rise to asymmetric friction. Under conditions of light damping and low forward kinetic friction, and with a single cuticle segment initially compressed, the passive dynamics of this model produce wave-like motion resembling that of real larvae. The presence of a volume-conserving hydrostatic skeleton allows a wave reaching the anterior of the body to initiate a new wave at the posterior, thus recycling energy. Forcing our model with a sinusoidal input reveals conditions under which power transfer from control to body may be maximised. A minimal control scheme using segmentally localised positive feedback is able to exploit these conditions in order to maintain wave-like motion indefinitely. These principles could form the basis of a design for a novel, soft-bodied, crawling robot.

From Passive Dynamic Walking to Passive Turning of Biped walker
Dynamically stable biped robots mimicking human locomotion have received significant attention over the last few decades. Formerly, the existence of stable periodic gaits for straight walking of passive biped walkers was well known and investigated as the notion of passive dynamic walking. This study is aimed to elaborate this notion in the case of three dimensional (3D) walking and extend it f...

The research on the principles of legged locomotion is an interdisciplinary endeavor. Such principles are coming together from research in biomechanics, neuroscience, control theory, mechanical design, and artificial intelligence. Such research can help us understand human and animal locomotion in implementing useful legged vehicles. There are three main reasons for exploring the legged locomot...

In this paper we investigate a biological framework to generate and adapt a motion pattern so that can be energy efficient. In fact, the motion pattern in legged animals and human emerges among interaction between a central pattern generator neural network called CPG and the musculoskeletal system. Here, we model this neuro - musculoskeletal system by means of a leg - like mechanical system cal...

The investigation of gait strategies at low gravity environments gained momentum recently as manned missions to the Moon and to Mars are reconsidered. Although reports by astronauts of the Apollo missions indicate alternative gait strategies might be favored on the Moon, computational simulations and experimental investigations have been almost exclusively limited to the study of either walking...
متن کاملPassive elastic properties of the rat ankle.
Passive properties of muscles and tendons, including their elasticity, have been suggested to influence motor control. We examine here the potential role of passive elastic muscle properties at the rat ankle joint, focusing on their potential to specify an equilibrium position of the ankle. We measured the position-dependent passive torques at the rat ankle before and after sequential cuts of f...
